A Gift that keeps on Giving

Graduation gifts often come wrapped in boxes, tucked inside greeting cards, or handed over with a ribbon. As an eighth-grade graduation gift, Winston's Uncle Mark and Aunt Susan gave him something far more valuable than money or material possessions, a mission trip to Guatemala. It was an invitation to step outside his comfort zone, encounter a different way of life, and witness Christ at work in a community marked by both hardship and extraordinary faith.

Winston and his mom, Brooke Phelps traveled on an eight-day trip to Guatemala on a mission trip that would become more than a celebration of finishing St. Thomas More School. It became an opportunity to witness lives shaped by joy, resilience, and unwavering faith in the midst of tremendous hardship.

While the physical needs were evident, what left the deepest impression was something that couldn't be measured. The faith of the Guatemalan people, their gratitude for the simplest blessings, and the joy they shared despite hardship offered a powerful reminder that true wealth is not found in what we possess but in how we trust God and love one another.

For many parents, we have only a handful of years to help shape our children's hearts and values before they begin making their own way in the world. Experiences like this become part of the foundation they carry with them for a lifetime.

“Beyond humbled to have gone on such an amazing mission trip to Guatemala with Winston. The faith and gratefulness of the Guatemalan people, even with so much sadness and poverty around them, was overwhelming. I’m still processing all the stories we heard, people we met, and everything we experienced,” shared Brooke.

By choosing to give Winston an experience instead of a possession, his Uncle and Aunt invested in something eternal. The lessons of gratitude, compassion, and service learned in Guatemala are gifts that will continue to bear fruit long after the trip has ended.

Our faith grows strongest when it is lived. Whether through serving our neighbors across the world or caring for those in our own community, each act of generosity has the power to shape hearts for generations.

When we intentionally pour into our children, strengthen our families, and invest in our communities, everyone is changed. Faith is deepened. Compassion grows. Hope is shared.
