The Upper Room

The Upper Room is a nonprofit organization that addresses educational equity in inner city Kansas City. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade students. Tutoring activities include reading with students, working with students on homework help and assisting teachers with classroom activities. Volunteer time is flexible.  There are both after school and summer programs.

One-to-One Challenge

The Upper Room has partnered with the Kansas City Missouri school district to help 2000 students in after-school programs. Would you like to help a student? Or do you know someone who would? It only takes one hour, once a week, to impact a student’s success. Our Summer Academic Camp averaged one year’s progress in the eight weeks. It’s easy to sign up. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Contact Colleen McEvoy Schorgl and tell her you would like to tutor or get more information.

2. Complete a background check form and fax it to 816.926.9724 (if you are over 18).

3. Pick a day of the week (Monday-Thursday usually 4:15-5:15) to tutor.

Our Mission is to provide a welcoming, inclusive and loving community by proclaiming and living God’s Word through worship, education, and social justice.
